<p>The article examines the current state of affairs in the Irish prison system over the past 15 years. The current prison policy in Ireland is a disaster for both the inmates and society as a whole. Creating safe prisons that provide inmates with access to general and vocational education, psychological and social support, and multidisciplinary rehabilitation programs tailored to different types of offenders remains a pressing issue for the Irish criminal justice system and requires a review of the current prison policy. The problem of overcrowded prisons, with all the consequences that this entails, such asinadequate conditions and treatment of prisoners, the inaccessibility of rehabilitation programs for the most part of the convicts, and the increased risk of criminal infection, drug addiction, or physical or psychological abuse among convicts, requires a review of the concept of punishment and a shift from a punitive model of punishment to a humane model that focuses on rehabilitating convicts and providing assistance to individuals in difficult situations. In this regard, the measures taken in the Irish criminal justice system to change the sentencing strategy for young people under the age of 30 have proven to be effective in using alternative forms of punishment for this category of individuals. This paper presents the analysis of the results of foreign studies that examine the causes, consequences, and ways to overcome the current crisis in the Irish prison system, emphasizing the need for decriminalization of itspenal system</p>
<kwd-group xml:lang="ru"><kwd>переполненность тюрем</kwd><kwd>альтернативные виды наказаний</kwd><kwd>реабилитация</kwd><kwd>восстановление справедливости</kwd><kwd>рецидивизм</kwd></kwd-group><kwd-group xml:lang="en"><kwd>overcrowded prisons</kwd><kwd>alternative forms of punishment</kwd><kwd>rehabilitation</kwd><kwd>restoration of justice</kwd><kwd>recidivism</kwd></kwd-group></article-meta></front><back><ref-list><ref id="ref1"><mixed-citation publication-type="other" xml:lang="ru">Irish Prison Chaplains Annual Report to the Minister for Justice &amp; LawReform.
